Nicky Jam has un-endorsed Donald Trump for president. The reggaeton artist’s move comes after roast comic Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico “literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” And like many Puerto Rican celebs, Jam isn’t taking that disrespect lightly. Jam posted a video in Spanish on Instagram, walking back his support of the former president. “The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was what’s best for the economy in the United States, where a lot of Latinos live,” he said, per Variety’s translation. His thinking was that a business man would be the best fit for revitalizing the economy. Nicky Jam said that “never in his life” did he think a comedian would trash PR at a Trump rally. “That’s why I’m renouncing my support for Donald Trump and stepping away from any political conversation. Puerto Rico deserves respect.”
Jam previously appeared at a Las Vegas Trump rally, where Trump introduced him as a “hot” woman. “Do you know Nicky?” he asked the crowd. “She’s hot!” So to paraphrase Britta Perry, Nicky Jam can excuse being misgendered, but he draws the line at racist jokes. Honestly, a more reasonable line to draw than Britta’s.
